What this tool does

  • Applies a regional multiplier from your ZIP and market type
  • Estimates installed cost ranges for vinyl, fiber-cement, and engineered wood (LP SmartSide)
  • Accounts for tear-off, stories, elevation complexity, trim/J-channel/corner posts, soffit/fascia, and rainscreen
  • Explains how the range was calculated so you can fine-tune to your scope

How to measure exterior wall area

  • Measure each wall: length × height; total the square footage
  • Subtract large doors and grouped windows to avoid double-counting
  • Add 10–15% for waste; higher for complex gables, dormers, or lots of cut lines
  • Keep notes on stories, bump-outs, and trim you plan to upgrade

Siding Cost Estimator

Use the calculator below. It returns low / typical / high ranges for planning. Adjust selections until the range aligns with your design, materials, and trim package.

Siding Cost Estimator

Enter exterior wall area, siding material, stories, tear-off, elevation complexity, trim package, rainscreen, waste, permits, access, and ZIP factor. This tool returns low / typical / high ranges — not a quote.

Applies a regional cost factor. Fine-tune with Market type or Manual mode.

Adjust within region (e.g., rural vs metro).

Manual only: 1.00 = national baseline.

Sum each wall (length × height), subtract large windows/doors, add 10–15% for waste.

Package affects corners, J-channel, window/door surrounds, soffit/fascia.

Adds furring to promote drainage/drying — protects paint and sheathing.

Only used if “Custom %” is selected.

Sets a flat repair range instead of per-sq-ft replacement.

Results & next steps

  • Tweak settings for material, tear-off, complexity, trims, and rainscreen until the range fits your budget
  • Request a firm, line-item estimate so we can verify sheathing, house wrap, flashings, and access on site
  • Ask about profile and color updates: lap, board-and-batten accents, and coordinated soffit/fascia
  • Use the final estimate to plan schedule, lead times, and staging around weather windows

How this calculator works

  • Base installed $/sf is set by material family (vinyl, fiber-cement, engineered wood)
  • Tear-off/disposal adds to $/sf; stories, complexity, and access apply multipliers
  • Trim package and rainscreen add per-square-foot allowances for corners, J-channel, window/door surrounds, and drainage gaps
  • Your ZIP and market type apply a regional factor to the subtotal for local pricing

Baseline ranges we use

These planning ranges inform the estimator. Your specific selections and local factor refine the total on the page.

  • Vinyl siding: $9–$14/sq ft installed (add tear-off when selected)
  • Fiber-cement siding: $13–$20/sq ft installed
  • Engineered wood (LP SmartSide): $12–$18/sq ft installed
  • Rainscreen adders, trim upgrades, and two-story access apply as shown in the calculator

Siding FAQs

How accurate is this siding estimate?

It’s a planning range based on your inputs and local factor. A site visit confirms sheathing condition, moisture control (house wrap, tapes, flashings), soffit/fascia details, and access for a firm, written quote.

Do I need a full tear-off or can I overlay?

Tear-off costs more up front but lets us inspect and correct sheathing, flash properly at windows and penetrations, and reset trims. Overlays can work on flat, dry walls with compatible substrates, but they may limit future maintenance.

What’s the difference between vinyl, fiber-cement, and engineered wood?

Vinyl offers value, broad colors, and fast serviceability. Fiber-cement delivers crisp lines and paint-holding power. Engineered wood (LP SmartSide) provides a warm wood look with improved stability and efficient install when ends are sealed and joints flashed.

What is a rainscreen and when should I add it?

A rainscreen creates a small drainage and ventilation gap behind cladding. It helps paint and sheathing last longer, especially on complex elevations or shaded, moisture-prone walls.

Will board-and-batten cost more than lap?

Often slightly more due to layout, cuts, and trims. Many homes mix profiles—lap on main elevations with board-and-batten in gables—to balance curb appeal and cost.

How long does a typical re-siding take?

Most single-story projects complete in about a week after material delivery. Two-story homes and complex elevations take longer. We schedule around weather windows and keep the site tidy daily.
